Heat Stroke

Uvita, being a coastal area, has a very warm climate, which can increase the risk of heat stroke.

Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat-related illness. It occurs when the body loses its ability to regulate its temperature properly, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Heat stroke is most common in children and older adults.
Children are particularly vulnerable because their thermoregulation system is not yet fully developed, while older adults may have difficulty regulating their body temperature due to age-related changes. However, it can also affect young adults and healthy individuals.

Heat stroke is a serious condition caused by the body overheating. It usually results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures or intense physical activity in hot weather.

It is considered heat stroke when the body temperature rises to 104°F (40°C) or higher. This condition is more frequent during the summer months and requires immediate medical attention, as it can cause severe damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and other vital organs if not treated in time.

  • Intense thirst
  • Excessive sweating
  • Dry skin
  • Fatigue, exhaustion, and weakness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Disorientation, delirium, or even coma

Infants and young children are especially vulnerable. In addition to the general symptoms, heat stroke in children can also cause:

  • Severely irritated skin due to sweat (heat rash): Especially in the neck, chest, underarms, elbow creases, and diaper area
  • Extreme irritability: Including inconsolable crying in infants
  • Move the person to a shaded or cool place
  • Remove unnecessary clothing
  • Apply cool, damp cloths to the head, neck, and armpits
  • If the person is conscious, offer small sips of cool water
  • Seek medical attention immediately

If you’re planning to enjoy the sun and summer weather, remember to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. These simple precautions can help you prevent heat stroke, a dangerous condition that can severely impact your health.
