Image-Guided Biopsy
An image-guided biopsy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that allows your doctor to obtain a small tissue sample from an area of concern without the need for major surgery.
Using advanced imaging technology, such as ultrasound, we can precisely locate the area being evaluated and guide a specialized needle to the exact location. This improves accuracy while minimizing discomfort and reducing the risk of complications.
Depending on your specific condition, your physician may recommend one of two types of biopsies:
- Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA): Uses a very thin needle to collect cells for microscopic evaluation. This technique is commonly used for thyroid nodules, lymph nodes, and other superficial lesions.
- Core Needle Biopsy (CNB): Uses a slightly larger needle to obtain a small core of tissue while preserving its structure. This provides more detailed information and is often recommended when evaluating tumors or other complex conditions.
The tissue sample is then analyzed by a pathologist to help diagnose infections, inflammatory diseases, benign conditions, or cancer, allowing your healthcare team to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.
What are the benefits?
- Minimally invasive with little or no scarring
- Highly accurate due to real-time imaging guidance
- Usually performed under local anesthesia
- Short recovery time with most patients returning home the same day
- Helps avoid unnecessary surgery while providing an accurate diagnosis
