When Should You Take Your Child to the Pediatrician?

At Vargas Medical Center, many parents frequently ask us:
When should I take my child to the pediatrician?
How often is it recommended to go?
That’s why today we want to guide you and provide the information you need to care for the health of the little ones at home.
Until What Age Should Children See a Pediatrician?
It is recommended that children and adolescents see a pediatrician from birth until the age of 18. Visits should be adjusted according to the child’s age and developmental stage:
- From birth to 6 months: First check-up at 15 days old, then once a month
- From 6 to 12 months: One visit every 2 months
- From 12 to 24 months: Every 3 months
- From 2 to 5 years: Every 6 months
- After age 5: At least once a year
These guidelines may vary depending on the pediatrician’s advice, so it’s important to maintain regular communication with your healthcare provider.
Well-Child Visits: Prevention and Development
One of the most important reasons to see a pediatrician is for well-child check-ups. These visits help detect any abnormalities in growth or development early on.
During these appointments, the pediatrician will evaluate:
- Weight and height
- Reflexes and psychomotor development
- Feeding and sleep patterns
- Compliance with the vaccination schedule
When to Take Your Child to the Pediatrician Outside of Regular Check-Ups
There are warning signs that should not be ignored:
- Persistent fever: Higher than 38.5°C (101.3°F) for more than 3 days or not responding to medication
- Breathing difficulties: Fast breathing, wheezing, or unusual sounds
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea: Risk of dehydration, especially in infants
- Changes in mood or behavior: Irritability, withdrawal, or unusual conduct
- Skin rashes: Could indicate allergies, infections, or immune disorders
- Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss
- Persistent abdominal pain: Could be related to infections, intolerances, or appendicitis
- Excessive fatigue: Possible anemia or sleep disorders
- Frequent headaches: Should be assessed to rule out migraines or neurological issues
- Hearing and vision problems: Crucial for development and school performance
Vaccine Control: Essential for Child Health
Keeping up with vaccinations is a key part of pediatric visits. Vaccines protect children from serious illnesses such as measles, rubella, polio, and meningitis, among others.
Additionally, by vaccinating your child, you’re also helping protect those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons—such as newborns or individuals with immune conditions.
During these visits, the pediatrician will:
- Ensure the vaccination schedule is up to date
- Evaluate any possible side effects
- Answer your questions as a parent or caregiver
- Inform you about new or upcoming booster shots
